There is a new type of fuel, it is mostly made out of Corn, but the demand is so High, right now the company that produce it can’t keep up. I think it’s called Ethanol 98!?!
Here in the UK there is an alternative and it is half the price of gas/petrol and that is LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) this is similar to -but not exactly the same as- cooking gas. Most vehicles are relatively easy to convert and in the UK you can buy them mail-order. I am told that in Australia it is the commonest form of vehicle fuel whilst in the UK more and more Filling Stations when they have a refit are providing for LPG.
Ethanol, LPG, (propane) Natural Gas, are all viable substitutes. However, with the possible exception of ethanol, they will all require fairly extensive modifications. If a new car is out of the question, these modifications may be as well. There are quite a few things you can do to try to increase the fuel mileage you are getting now. Many tips are simple and free. I would suggest doing a bit of research and at least get the best mpg you can for now.
I am assuming by the question, that you want to modify your vehicle to run on a different fuel. Since you said gas… not diesel… your options are limited, other then ethanol, which is not much cheaper the standard gas. Your cheapest conversion is LPG, Liquid Propane Gas. The problem is propane has less BTU’s, which means it produces less energy per unit/volume. Since it produces less energy, the engine must use more of it to run. LPG may be cheaper to buy, but you use more to drive. Generally speaking… you wont get your money back for the conversion with fuel savings. A much more expensive conversion is natural gas. The problem which costs money is the storage tanks. Natural gas will not compress to a liquid, therefor the only way to get enough volume is to compress it to extremely high pressures (3000-5000PSI). This is a problem in the event of a accident, you are basically sitting over a missile. The final conversion and also very expensive is to go with a diesel engine. Diesel’s have the most options for alternative fuels and are also, just by design, much more efficient then a gas engine. A diesel can run standard diesel fuel, Bio-Diesel, old kitchen fryer oil (when filtered correctly), and most other waste oils. At this point… consider buying a small diesel car, hybrid vehicle, or electric vehicle. You could also buy a moped, motorcycle, or going by bicycle, transit, or walk.

I do. But if I told you the oil companies would have me rubbed out.
You can get bio-diesel for your car. It’s made out of chip fat.
A couple car manufacturers are producing cars that run on ethanol now, which is a fuel derived from corn and other natural sources.
This has a list of cars that can run on ethanol, though it only lists stations where you can refuel in Milwaukee:
Cut a hole in your floor board, and do like the Flintstones!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!
You could get an electric car, but those are expensive.
buy a motor cycle, or moped, 48 mpg or chevy geo 37 mpg,3 cylinder

Sorry I couldn’t be much help!
Yes, GM is creating FlexFuel vehicles, that use E85, derived from corn.
