the best thing to do would be for everyone to just stop buying it. of course the retailers know that won’t happen because people need to travel for whatever reason, so we are pretty much screwed.
the options are…. use less gas… drive the car les.s.. use public transport.. then… the other options are end war… increase production… be less dependent on OPEC

Pass legislation that would claim all current patents on advanced energy technologies defunct, unless made available for mass production to the public. Most of these patents are held by oil companies or their subsidiaries in an effort to keep them hidden from public view and maintain oil profitability.
There is no short term fix. The cost of the factors of gas is the big thing we can fix. To address the overal demand for crude oil, we should address its link to electrcity, sometihng like 60% of all the imported crude goes to make electrcity, so we need to consider wind and solar on a mass scale, like off the cape and in the souther CA desert, but we should also require evey new house built in the uS needs at least a 2kva solar panel and the electronics in the house to use for all applications. We also need to build some new nukes–admitting that is a long term solution. Then we should also increase mileage on all cars, trucks and SUVs massively. Addressing the demand for gas, and demand for crude, will let gas prices go down.
