It does no occur naturally in quantity. It is just hydrogen, with extra neutrons in the nucleus. It was identified in research for atomic weapons, in the form of “heavy water”.

Deuterium is the form of hydrogen with one neutron in the nucleus. It is a stable isotope, forming about one hydrogen atom in 8000 in nature. It was discovered in the 1930s, and was extracted from water. The only plant producing deuterium was in Norway, which was the main reason why Germany invaded Norway in World War 2, to have a source of deuterium which was used in nuclear research.
It is possible that deuterium will be involved in fusion energy production, if that technology is ever made commercially feasible. It is used in thermonuclear weapons and in some types of chemical and biological research.
